When is the best time to post a link? How long will a shared link remain popular? Is there a “Best” time to post a link to a website of blog?
I came across an article from Search Engine Watch that gives excellent advice about this.
Too many people make the mistake of posting blog updates on Facebook, Tumblr or Twitter at whatever time of the day or week thinking “They’ll see it when they see it.”
Research shows that there is, in fact, a “Best” time to give such notifications. However, the different social networks have different peak times.
To help me illustrate this, I want to share some statistics I came across.
This study shows the half-life of each social network. This information tells us by what time half of the clicks for a shared link will occur. Twitter has a 2.8 hour half-life and Facebook has a 3.2 hour half-life. Direct traffic sources (email, instant message sends, etc.) have a 3.4 hour half-life but the winner is YouTube with a 7.4 hour half-life. The amount of attention that YouTube gets will linger. This doesn’t mean that YouTube get more attention but that it isn’t as quick out of the starting gate.
Why do I share this?
Well let’s say you update your blog and want all of your Facebook friends to know you made an update and want them to take a look. If you make that notification by posting the link and message on Facebook 3.2 hours too soon, then you will only get half of the attention. It goes the same with Twitter, Email, etc.
So with that rant done, when are the best times to send update notifications?
You will find from this research that Twitter and Facebook are effective at similar times where as Tumblr and Email are better at other times. Let’s take a look.
Posting a link to Twitter after 3 p.m. on a Friday is pretty much pointless, according to bitly’s cumulative data. With Facebook the traffic peaks midweek and the posts made on Friday or the weekend get far less attention.
Tumblr is a different story entirely. Friday is an optimal time to post. Bitly recommends that you wait till Friday after 4 p.m. to post to Tumblr. Any day from 7 to 10 p.m. gives a great amount of attention. “This runs counter to what you see on Facebook and Twitter, thanks to the culture and behavior patterns of each network,” bitly said.
For optimal success consider posting your links accordingly. All of the following are in Eastern Time and if you live outside of the country, adapt these times from U.S. Eastern Time to your time zone:
Post 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday – Thursday
Especially post 1-3 p.m. Monday – Thursday
Avoid posting after 8 p.m. during the weekends
Avoid posting after 3 p.m. on Friday
Avoid posting during any part of the weekends
Post 1-4 p.m. during the week
Especially post midweek 1-3 p.m.
The very best time is Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Avoid posting between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. during the week
Avoid posting on weekends
Post from 4 p.m. onward
Especially post from 7 -10 p.m. onward (Primarily Monday and Tuesday)
Post on Friday evenings
Remember this next time you post a link to your site and pay attention to the difference it makes.
