There are many articles giving suggestions on what to do to get more readers. There are also many articles helping you avoid techniques that will hurt you. But what about an article discussing the things that used to be good but no longer are? Are there many techniques that used to help you rise in rankings that will now hurt you? Of course there are, it’s called buying links. We all know that. But did you know there are quite a few more past exercises that many don’t realize will bring you down. Think about the content you provide; how effective is it?
In an article that Greg Habermann wrote on Searchenginewatch.com, he talks about the ten SEO methods that need to stop being used. I want to pass on my favorites.
Press Releases Without News
Greg shares a conversation he recently had:
“Well if free article submissions aren’t good, maybe I could do a press release instead?”
— “Do you have anything newsworthy?”
“Well, I don’t know but I need to get my name out and it would be a great chance to get some links from the news channels. I was thinking maybe doing 2 a month.”
— “No. Just.. No.”
You own a business and that is great, but you aren’t guaranteed interest just for that. You have to work for it.
Losing Your Voice Through Automation
There are several tools out there that help develop and target your content but be sure to use it properly. You can’t saw a board with a hammer. Tools are very useful when used correctly.
You need a voice. Without his voice, you aren’t human. A reader will follow you because they expect to hear something familiar and relatable.
Don’t underestimate the value of using social media. Few things will help you build your voice and online presence.
Focusing on Google Only
Who puts all their money in one stock or eggs in one basket? Same with rankings and traffic sources. Don’t put all of your energy in getting Google to like you. Use other means such as Bing, Facebook, Advertising and Twitter. If you have a solid yet diverse portfolio, then if one part goes down, you still get traffic.
These are just some of my takings for that great article and just remind you that some of the methods that used to work, no longer do. You can see for yourself by clicking here.
